Columbia County selects new superintendent

Charles Nagle was picked as Columbia County's next school superintendent in a school board meeting this evening.

The Columbia County school board chose Mr. Nagle over Liberty County Superintendent Steve Wilmoth.

Currently the associate superintendent for Columbia County, Mr. Nagle's selection ends a monthslong search process to find a successor for retiring Superintendent Tommy Price.

A superintendent search committee selected Dr. Wilmoth and Mr. Nagle as the finalists for the county's top education post in December.

The board still has to officially offer Mr. Nagle the post and negotiate a salary before his selection is finalized. Should he accept, he would assume the post in July.

Mr. Nagle has served as the associate superintendent in Columbia County since 1999.

War of words drawing attention to special legislative primary

MEMPHIS, Tenn. A special election for a state Senate seat in Memphis is getting some attention because of squabbling between a Democratic candidate and a local attorney.

Former city attorney Robert Spence, a Democrat on the primary ballot in tomorrow's election, is locked in a war of words with lawyer Richard Fields.

The primary election will determine who will face Republican Larry Parrish in the March 13th general election.

The winner gains the seat vacated by Democrat Steve Cohen, who was elected to Congress last year.

Fields has sent a letter to Democrats warning them not to vote for Spence, questioning his record as city attorney from 1997 to 2004 and saying he tried to do unethical things.

Spence responded with a letter that questioned Fields' stability.
