Lakeview's Dillard a double-duty standout

Garland Lakeview quarterback Daren Dillard committed to play football at Texas State last weekend, but he also wants to play basketball.

Dillard is not sure the Texas State basketball coaches are interested. For testimony to his talents, Lakeview basketball coach Tony Mauldin suggests Texas State look at the film from Lakeview's 62-59 win last season against South Garland.Dillard scored 33 points, including the game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer.

"We drew up the play, and he was our second option," Mauldin said. "He got the ball, the guy ran to him. He ball-faked, relocated and hit the three. It's one of those games where we didn't play well as a team, and he kept us in it."

More file to run for attorney general

Yesterday Robert V. Bullock, who worked in the office for more than 30 years, announced his Democratic candidacy to be the state's chief law enforcement official.

Meanwhile, Jon Larson, a Lexington criminal-defense attorney, filed for the office Tuesday, becoming the second Republican in the race. State Rep. Stan Lee from Lexington said yesterday he is inclined to enter the race, and another GOP legislator is expected to decide by week's end.

It still is not clear whether the current holder of the office -- Democrat Greg Stumbo -- will seek re-election or run for governor.

Bullock, a Frankfort resident, worked in the attorney general's office from December 1968 to September 2000. In the job, he helped establish the office's consumer-protection division and worked on environmental-protection issues.
