Van Gustave defense attorney comments on guilty plea
On behalf of the family of Van Gustave and as his attorney, I would like to comment on his guilty plea and sentencing in Lowell Superior Court on Jan. 18 before the Hon. Jane Haggerty. As your newspaper has reported, Mr. Gustave’s case ended on that day with his plea to second-degree murder and other charges involved in the death of Ryan Sullivan and the stabbing of Jules Stevens and William Tighe on July 1, 2004. He will be eligible for parole in the year 2019, when he is 39 years old. No one can understand and appreciate the depth of the sorrow and loss that the Sullivan family has, is and will continue to experience as a result of the terrible events of that summer evening. The Stevens and Tighe families have also felt the pain of this case, and Mr. Gustave realizes his role in that suffering.
Employee 1 for 2 in grievances against city
OAKLAND CITY-The board of works responded Tuesday to two grievances recently filed by a city employee by disagreeing with him on one issue and agreeing with him on the other. In his first grievance, Brent Shurig, relief plant operator, alleged that the city should pay him the salary stipulated under contract for a plant operator, even when he was not at either the water or wastewater plants. Shurig contended that the job description for the relief plant operator required a number of duties that would have to be performed - some outside of the plant. But under the terms of the contract negotiated by the city and the Teamsters Union, a plant relief operator is only entitled to the same salary as a plant operator when he or she is working at the plant. .
Parental Controls Don't Save MySpace
Just a day after announcing new monitoring software, MySpace and its parent company News Corp. were sued for fraud and negligence by four families who say their teen daughters were assaulted by adult members of the social-networking site. In individual lawsuits filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, families from New York, Texas, Pennsylvania and South Carolina allege negligence, recklessness, fraud and negligent misrepresentation. The legal action came as MySpace confirmed it developed software allowing parents to keep better tabs on teens online. "In our view, MySpace waited entirely too long to attempt to institute meaningful security measures that effectively increase the safety of their underage users," attorney Jason Itkin of Houston-based Arnold & Itkin said. Itkin and Austin, Texas-based law firm Barry & Loewy seek a jury trial.
