Conn. attorney awarded for passion, pro bono work

STAMFORD, Conn. — As Joe Khanna put it, he felt “very honored" to learn that he had been nominated to receive the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association's 2006 “Best Lawyers Under 40" award.

And when the organization notified Khanna, a senior counsel at Pitney Bowes Inc., that he was one of 16 attorneys from across the United States chosen to receive the award, he almost didn't believe it.

“I was a little shocked when I found out," Khanna said. “If you take a look at the list of honorees from this year and in years past, there are some really influential people on it. It's quite an honor to be included among them."

The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association announced the 16 recipients of the 2006 Best Lawyers Under 40 award during the group's annual convention last November in Philadelphia; it was the smallest group in the 4-year history of the award.

Texas : Texas Attorney General Abbott Shuts Down Pyramid Scheme ...

January 23, 2007 -- AUSTIN - Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott today stopped a Dallas-based pyramid scheme from illegally marketing the so-called "top secret gas pill" that it falsely claimed would increase fuel efficiency in automobiles. The Attorney General's settlement with BioPerformance and its owners, Lowell Mims and Gustavo Romero, prevents the defendants from continuing to deceptively market their products and ends the State's eight-month legal action against the company.A combination of the defendants' frozen assets and the dissolution of two trusts created by Mims and Romero will provide more than $7 million in compensation to deceived consumers. Mims and Romero may continue to operate any legitimate enterprise, but may not deceptively market BioPerformance pills or similar fuel additive products.

Court Reverses $20 Million Jury Award to Ex-State Farm Agents

The Missouri Court of Appeals on Tuesday threw out a $20 million jury award to five former State Farm Insurance agents who claimed they were improperly terminated for criticizing the company's treatment of policyholders.

A three-judge panel of the court's Western District ruled that as independent contractors operating their own businesses selling State Farm policies, the agents could be terminated by State Farm "at will.'' Nothing in the open-ended agreements the agents signed with Illinois-based State Farm gave them contractual rights or obligated the company to show good cause for terminating the working relationship, the court said. The agreements also allowed the agents to stop selling State Farm policies at any time.

The five agents, one each from Missouri, Ohio and Texas and two from Maryland, filed suit in Missouri's Jackson County Circuit Court over their January 2000 terminations by State Farm.
