Notebook: Lake Highlands' Grieders never far from sport
Lake Highlands' Luke and Isaac Grieder can't escape the watchful eye of their coach, even at home. That's because their coach is also their dad, Pete Grieder. "The good part is we have a coach that we know and trust," said Isaac, a freshman. "The bad part is most of the guys, they won't want to tell us stuff because we might tell our dad." Luke, a senior, said being the coach's son means he can't joke around as much, but there are benefits. "Whatever happens during practice or at a meet, we'll talk about it at home," said Luke, a senior. "It helps a lot when we've got to make weight and stuff. With him being there, if helps us focus on it more." Luke is 24-3 this season wrestling at the 152 and 160 weight classes. Isaac is 30-8 as a 135-pounder.
Hawaii's All Out Crisis in Medical Care - Doctor Shortage Only ...
Rumors of my retirement are much exaggerated. I am an orthopedic surgeon in my 20th year of practice here in Kona. I read the Jan. 17 article in a Big Island newspaper on the M.D. shortage with great interest, including "don't fracture a bone in Kona because there's not an orthopedic surgeon." Later that day, during my second surgery, fixing a broken hip, it occurred to me that perhaps the statement was correct. Perhaps I really did retire, and I'm just having one of those "work dreams." So I pinched myself. No, I didn't wake up from this bad dream. We have an all-out crisis in medical care -- a sinking ship. "No new patients" policies are commonplace at existing physician's offices and more practicing physicians are contemplating jumping into the lifeboats. This problem is not going to turn around in the next six months.
Former CMU receiver pleads no contest
A former Central Michigan University football player accused of sexually assaulting two women started serving jail time Friday following a plea deal in Isabella County Trial Court. Justin Dewayne Harper, 23, of Abilene, Texas pleaded no contest to aggravated indecent exposure and aggravated assault in Judge William Rush's courtroom. A no contest plea is not an admission of guilt but is treated as such for sentencing purposes. In exchange for the plea, prosecutors dropped three third-degree criminal sexual conduct and three fourth-degree CSC charges against Harper. Harper, who was charged in connection with the alleged assault of three women at a Mt. Pleasant apartment building March 24, is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 26 at 2 p.m. in Chief Judge Paul Chamberlain's courtroom.
